China

Impression of Modern Shanghai

Visiting China is on my bucket list of Asian countries to explore the cultures. China has influenced so many aspects in Asia including the food, business, and lifestyle. Every province in China has diverse cultures and characteristics that are worth exploring. For example, Beijing has more traditional architecture design, whilst Shanghai is more modern with skyline buildings. Beside that, China has a prominent iconic dragon symbol which is shown in almost every building, house, and shop. The symbol represents power, wisdom, and good fortune.

At this time, I would like to share my first journey in Shanghai by direct flight from London to Shanghai for 13 hours. Luckily, I have a Chinese best friend who can assist me to interpret the Chinese language. However, Chinese people who do not speak English very well rely on mobile apps to translate foreign languages so foreigners do not need to worry about language barriers.

In addition, there are so many things that I need to be well prepared for before I go to China. Although China has different systems and regulations when it comes to technology, China uses its own apps. Unlike in most countries that use America’s tech such as whatsapp, google, and social media, these apps are not available in China unless you use a VPN. In fact, some VPNs still get banned and work slow even though it’s a paid for service.

China has its own technology, especially the payment system which is called WeChat Pay and Ali Pay. WeChat is a super App which has several features such as payment, instant messaging, and online shop. I recommend setting up the app before coming to China to prevent the hassle. A lot of shops do not accept cash notes and cards, consequently you may feel frustrated during the transaction.

Moreover, the public transportation is clean and easy to use because they have english signs. The metro card for public transportation can be purchased directly from the machine. Pedestrian and cycle paths are also accessible in Shanghai, even I was surprised by the escalator for pedestrians to cross the road which has such advanced infrastructure.

My travel in china was incredible satisfying and I managed to visit the following tourist attractions:

  • Yu Garden
Yu garden is a classic chinese garden in Shanghai city that has a unique style with elegant bridges and ornaments. The garden does not only show the beautiful landscape, bridges, and plants, it also presents a bazaar and temple. The bazaar is just located along the road and outside the garden. It is a very busy place and fun at the same time.
Yu Garden
  • Taoist Temple
Taoism is one of the belief systems in China which depicts circular symbols called Yin and Yang. The taoist temple is located near Yu Garden which is very convenient to walk by. The temple is active with their followers who still do rituals and traditions. It was a fascinating experience to see people in person who believe in Taoism and pray in the temple because I have never seen it in real life before.
  • Oriental Pearl Tower
The Oriental Pearl Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in Shanghai which is designed with distinctive pink spheres. Visitors can enjoy the skyscraper views from its observation decks and walk across thrilling glass floors.
Oriental Pearl Tower
  • The Bund
I walk to the Bund to enjoy the views of Oriental pearl tower instead of visiting the Oriental pearl tower landmark directly. There is a riverside attraction with a cruise for stunning views across the river. The view was not clear enough because of the clouds and pollution. However, the view is breathtaking at night with shining light coming from the landmarks.
  • Food Culinary
When it comes to the Street food experience, Chinese food stalls offer various exotic foods  such as soup wonton, dimsum, hot pot, dry pot, and fish pot. Not to mention, food on sticks are also iconic in China with deep fried or grilled methods. It was confusing for me to choose because the price is cheap with lots of options.
  • Jing’an Temple & Park
Apart from Taoism, Buddhism is also a popular religion in China. I visited Jing’an temple and tried the experiences of their ritual by burning the incense. The temple is not free so the ticket needs to be purchased at the entrance of the temple. After I spent wandering around the temple, I went to Jing’an park which is located near the temple.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are a fan of ancient temples, garden enthusiast, porcelain collector, or skyscraper lover, Shanghai will give impressive memories. I had a lot of fun in Shanghai that was beyond my expectations. I definitely want to revisit in the future to explore museums,  traditional markets, and historical buildings.
